Danny Phillips and his son Tommy fish from their boat “Scorpio” out of the rocky Cadgwith Cove. They target shellfish and bottom-dwelling fish using pots and tangle nets in the life-rich waters off the Lizard Point. In the winter they switch to using smaller gill nets to catch red mullet.
As well as catching fish, Danny and Tommy collect important data about the health of the crawfish stocks in the waters off the Lizard. They report these data to the Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA), who use the information to develop new management strategies for the fishery.
Tommy is part of a new generation of Cadgwith fishers, following in the footsteps of his great-great-grandfather who also fished from Cadgwith.
You can often find Danny and Tommy’s fish, fresh off the boat, at the Treleague Dairy farm shop in Ruan Minor on the Lizard.
